I believe our current brides are not as sentimental as say our mothers or our grandmothers. The wedding dress is no longer being cherished as a family keepsake that hopefully your daughter will wear. A lot of brides are in their thirties, some are second marriages, some already have children and some don’t see children as being a part of their future. I also think that women like being individuals and don’t see their strong-minded daughters wearing their 20-30 year old wedding dress. There are plenty of ways to commemorate loved ones and add a sentimental touch to your wedding.
With that said, I can totally understand the “Trash the Dress” rage. If anything, it is the culmination of the anxiety and stress involved in planning the “perfect” wedding and dealing with dysfunctional families. The other thought behind this phenomenon is more optimistic. Brides that believe they have found their soul mate are not planning on ever getting married again and even if they did I am sure they would want a different dress. I also believe that it is a way of self-expression–I am woman, hear me roar.
I Am Woman
-Words and Music by Helen Reddy and Ray Burton
I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an’ pretend
’cause I’ve heard it all before
And I’ve been down there on the floor
No one’s ever gonna keep me down again
CHORUS
Oh yes I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
You can bend but never break me
’cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
’cause you’ve deepened the conviction in my soul
CHORUS
I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin’ arms across the land
But I’m still an embryo
With a long long way to go
Until I make my brother understand
Oh yes I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
Oh, I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman
Here are some of my favorite images of brides trashing the dress. Although, the fire does look a little CRAZY.
