5 Things to Look for in a Floral Designer | Harvey Designs | Event and Floral Design | Savannah, GA

When looking for a floral designer for your wedding there are a few things you should consider before you commit and sign a contract.  Here are five that we thought should at least be paid attention to:

#1  Style:

When you look through their portfolio (if they don’t have work they feel like showing off RUN!)  do you see modern, chic, romantic designs?  Or do you see arrangements that remind you of your Aunt’s second wedding back in the 80′s?  Floral designs are constantly changing and if they haven’t done any new styles since the 80′s or haven’t updated their books since the 80′s you might want to look else where.

#2  Customer Service:

A very important thing to pay attention to.  Does the floral designer treat you like you’re a valued customer or are you just simply another bride-to-be that is taking up their time?  This is your big day and if they “simply cannot be bothered” then there’s no reason why you should be either.

#3 Personality

This goes along with customer service.  Do you get along with them?  You’re not marrying them (well they might be a DIYer, but that’s a different story) but you will be spending at least the next 6 months leading up to your wedding exchanging emails and phone calls and meetings.  Make sure they understand you and can see your vision for your wedding.   If you can’t communicate with them fuhggeddaboutit.

#4 Organization:

Do they know where your proposal is?  Do they know where they are?  (Yes, they could be that out of it.)  Just make sure they can keep track of multiple things at once.  If they are not organized on a regular day of work how will they be able to handle the hustle and bustle of a wedding day set up?

#5 Price:

For a budget bride (and who isn’t these days with this economy… right?) this last point is very important.  A floral designer may say they can work with your budget, but make sure you get VALUE for every one of those dollars you spend.  Sometimes quality is sacrificed for the sake of the bottom line so while you may be concerned about how much it will cost you just make sure you get quality.  A good floral designer can make a shoe string budget look amazing and still have quality.  It just takes some flexibility and creativity.

Hope these tips helped.  It can be daunting to find the right vendors for a wedding with all the choices out there today.  If you can find quality vendors the only thing you will have to worry about on your big day is if you can die from being so happy.

Wednesdays with Amy–Recycled Bride, not just for budget conscious brides–Savannah Event Designer–Harvey Designs

I overheard the ladies in the shop talking about a newly found website, Recycled Bride, where brides can go to buy and sell gently used wedding items.  Well, of course I had to check it out and see if it was worth using as a resource for containers, vases, etc.  If you take the time to sift through all of the votive candles, cake toppers and cheesy silk flower arrangements, there are some really good high-end buys.  What rental business wouldn’t want to scoop up 200 Phillip Stark Louis Ghost Chairs for 50.00 each.  You can’t even rent them for less than 50.00-60.00 each.

Some items appear to be new, but advertised as reduced from the manufacturers or designers.  This Badgley Mischka Couture Pearl Bracelet is offered at 275.00 instead of 570.00.

Although you should be careful and compare prices for new items versus used items, I did find these 12″ x 108″ Damask table runners available in several colors for 4.25 each.  I can’t even buy the fabric for that amount not to mention the time sewing.

Probably most brides prefer the whole experience of shopping for the dress and the oohing and awing over them.  But there are some brides that know what they want, don’t mind that the dress has been gently worn and realize that they are getting a designer dress for a steal.  The bride that wore this lovely Monique Lhuillier  dress is asking 3,000.00 instead of the original 5,800.00.

I had to include this incredible Platinum Art Deco Vintage 5.41 ct Diamond Ring circa 1915-20.  It is a mere 17,500.00, but what a ring!!

Wednesdays with Amy–Cowboy Boots meet Succulents–Savannah Event Designer–Harvey Designs

Page 51 of the recent Territory Ahead catalog provided instant inspiration for those brides that are more natural and not so girly-girl.  Who doesn’t love a good pair of cowboy boots–especially turquoise.

The crinkle-cotton dress in oat with Battenburg lace accents is simple, elegant and perfect for a barn style wedding.  Bright sunflowers contrast nicely against the turqouise ball jars, patina vases and blue echeveria (succulents).

Sunflower cupcakes or a sunflower themed fondant wedding cake displayed on a wire cake stand completes the casual, light-hearted feel.

Featured Wedding: Harvey Designs, Event and Floral Design, Savannah Georgia

Surrounded by scattered peach rose petals, hurricane vases filled with floating candles and floating rose petals line the aisle. Even though the light from the candles was not visible during the ceremony, later, during the reception, it added an inviting glow to the party.

Bright blue, monogrammed, raw silk cones filled with peach dahlias and blue hydrangea marked the chairs along the aisle.

The flower girl wore a simple halo of soft blue hydrangea accented with brown ribbons.

The groom wore a simple boutonniere of a single peach dahlia, but the complimentary contrast with the blue of his oh-so-southern seersucker suit and blue striped bow tie was perfect.

The bride’s bouquet was comprised mainly of a single flower type, white dahlias. Accents of blue from hydrangea and green from dahlia buds add soft color interest to the otherwise monochromatic palette.

Spacious banquet tables were dressed with beautiful blue and brown runners on which were placed mini centerpieces of all manner of things. Glass vases, both round and square, were filled with peach dahlias, blue hydrangea, fiddlehead ferns, grass, kumquats and papaya, just to name a few of the unique and tropical fare in the diminutive arrangements.

A tropical collection of kumquats and green cymbidium orchids is flanked by papaya and ti leaves; just one element of a long, diverse spread of centerpieces.

Already visually interesting, just a few peach dahlia blooms add a pop of contrasting color to this bride and groom’s whimsical cake.

Wednesdays with Amy–Submerged Flowers–Savannah Event Designer–Harvey Designs–Savannah, GA

Submerged flowers have been a staple of contemporary designs for the last few years.   There are a multitude of flowers that work well submerged such as calla lilies, orchids, tulips, anthuriums and protea.   When the flowers are submerged, the water magnifies the bloom and creates a larger impact with fewer flowers.  Add submerged flowers  to a tall vase, vertically or in a circular pattern, to use as a pedestal for a large floral arrangement.

Add interest to a long table or ledge by choosing several flowers and different styles of vases.  Submerge the flowers in different ways, perhaps even inverted, and add floating candles.  Monstera leaves, variegated ginger leaves and manzanita branches work well to add different shapes and texture.  The persimmon manzanita branches even look like coral under water.  Incorporate shells, sea glass, pebbles, marbles, or fruit to add interest to the bottom of your vase.

Try these simple, yet elegant designs for your next dinner party.  Raid the cabinets, be creative and have fun.
